School action and school action plus

Information for parents and carers of all children with special educational needs and disabilities.

School Action / Early Years Action

When a class teacher, subject teacher or special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) identifies that your child has needs that are additional to or different from those provided as part of the school’s normal curriculum planning, the following will happen.

An individual education plan (IEP) will be written.
The SENCO will collect all the available information about your child and ask you, as parents, for extra information.
If any outside professionals are involved, for example, health or social services, it is good practice for them to work with the school, if they have your permission.
The information collected about the child will be kept in their individual records.

Possible support

Your child may receive support involving:

an IEP which will be put into place;
different learning materials;
specialist equipment;
support as an individual or in a group;
staff development and training to introduce more effective strategies; and
one-off or occasional advice from local education authority support staff.

School Action Plus / Early Years Action Plus

At School Action Plus, external support provided by the LEA and by outside agencies will usually be involved with your child. These can help with specialist assessment, specialist strategies or materials for school-based staff to use. Some specialist staff may work with your child.

An IEP will be written and you will be invited to all reviews.
The individual targets should be put into practice as far as possible in the classroom setting.
The school will use a range of teaching approaches and appropriate equipment and teaching materials including information and communications technology (ICT).

Possible support

Your child will receive all of School Action support mentioned opposite and:

one-to-one individual or group support;
an educational psychologist may be involved (every school has a named educational psychologist); and
continued input or advice from LEA support staff.

For a few children with complex needs, a statement of special educational needs may be issued by the LEA. If your child has a statement, please contact us for our information leaflets.
