P Levels and PIVATS

Information for parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities

P Levels and PIVATS

P levels and PIVATS are used to show progress in small steps. P levels are used for pupils who are working below level 1 of the National Curriculum. PIVATS give more detailed information on progress upto level 2 of the National Curriculum.

when writing Individual Education Plan targets
for showing pupil's strengths
in helping professionals describe progress in a consistent way

How P levels relate to the National Curriculum

Early development stages include P levels 1, 2 and 3

P levels start at 1 and go up to 8

National curriculum level 1 includes P levels 1a, 1b and 1c

National curriculum level 2 includes P levels 2a, 2b and 2c

What are P Levels?

P levels describe how a pupil is progressing towards level 1 of the National Curriculum
There are 8 P levels (P1 to P8)
Levels P1 to P3 focus on the early stages of development where a pupil's aims will be very simiar across all subject areas. A target covering English, Maths and Science at these early levels might be; to consistently choose a favourite toy from a choice of two toys
Levels P4 to P8 describe a pupil's progress within each separate subject area
National Curriculum Levels 1 and 2 can also be broken down further into 1a, 1b, 1c and 2a, 2b, 2c.

What are PIVATS?

PIVATS break down P levels into smaller steps.

(Acknowledgement is given to the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) for the publication of P Levels. Acknowledgement is also given to the Lancashire County Council Professional Development Services for the publication of PIVATS)
