Your views matter

Getting involved in your child's statutory assessment of special educational needs.

This leaflet is about the parents’ report the LEA will ask you to write as part of your child’s statutory assessment under the 1996 Education Act section 323.

Make the most of this opportunity to have a real say in what happens for your child and don’t be put off by any jargon. Statutory assessment is a complicated process. You can feel daunted, particularly getting started on a written report, but it does help you to be fully involved in your child’s assessment.

Why do I need to write a report?

You know your child better than anyone else. The report gives the local education authority (LEA) a fuller picture of your child’s needs.

It makes sure that the LEA know, and have a record of, all your views. Do not worry if these views are different from the views of other people. Remember that sometimes not all professionals agree.

The LEA consider your report equally alongside all the other reports and they will take your views into account.

What should the report look like?

The LEA will send you a letter asking you to give your written views on a sheet of paper headed ‘Appendix C’. You can add as many pages to this as you want.

You can handwrite your letter or produce it on a word processor. It makes no difference. It is the content that’s important.

The LEA produces guidelines, with ideas for headings and the kind of information that they need. If you have not received a leaflet, ask your child’s educational psychologist for one. The leaflet is only a guide. You can leave bits out or add things you feel are important.

When will I have to send my report back?

The letter will clearly say when the LEA need the report in. This should be six weeks after the LEA have started a formal assessment of your child’s needs. It is important that you try to send it in on time. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible to extend the time limit after talking to the LEA or your child’s educational psychologist.

Who can help me with my report?

The Parent Partnership Service was set up to provide information, advice and support to parents. We offer a variety of independent help and advice.

It may be difficult for any of the professionals already involved to offer you help with your report as they have their own reports to write about your child.

We can help by offering:

We are based in the voluntary sector and are supported by the Family Welfare Association and funded by Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.
